‘All Afghan women’ who flee Afghanistan due to the discriminatory measures imposed by the Taliban ‘can obtain refugee status’ because ‘they belong to the social group of Afghan women,’ the National Court of Asylum (CNDA) ruled on Thursday. This is the first time a French court has recognized the persecution of women due to their gender and thus the need to protect them as a ‘social group.’ ‘Afghan women and girls are perceived differently by Afghan society as a whole and must be considered as belonging to a social group that can be protected as refugees,’ the CNDA judges stated.
