The Council adopts the EU’s pact on migration and asylum

The European Union’s Council has recently approved a significant reform of the European asylum and migration system, aimed at managing migration more effectively. This reform includes a comprehensive set of ten legislative acts that revamp the entire framework governing asylum and migration within the EU. Key components of this reform include a screening regulation for swift identification and processing of migrants at external borders, and updated rules for the Eurodac database, enhancing data accuracy on migrants. Additionally, the reform introduces streamlined procedures for asylum applications and a mandatory border procedure for specific categories of asylum seekers, aimed at rapid assessment of applications at EU external borders.

This overhaul also addresses the distribution of responsibilities and the enhancement of solidarity among member states through a newly introduced solidarity mechanism. This mechanism is designed to ensure fair sharing of responsibilities, with options for member states to contribute through relocations, financial contributions, or other collaborative efforts. The crisis regulation within this pact provides the ability to manage mass migration events and extraordinary situations more efficiently, allowing for temporary deviations from standard procedures. Member states now have a two-year window to implement these new laws, with the European Commission set to offer an implementation plan to assist in this transition. These changes mark a significant step towards a more organized, fair, and effective management of migration flows into the EU.
