Germany’s Federal Office for Migration Reports 9,593 Afghan Women Applied for Asylum

Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has reported a sharp increase in Afghan women applying for asylum in the country.

A recent report by Der Spiegel states that over 3,100 Afghan women submitted asylum applications in July alone, which is more than double the number from the previous month.

BAMF links this rise to the worsening legal and social conditions for women in Afghanistan since the Taliban regained control. This situation is seen as a major reason for the new wave of migration.

Official data shows that since the start of this year, 9,593 Afghan women have applied for asylum in Germany. About 4,500 of these applications are follow-up requests from women already living in Germany who have not yet received full refugee status.

In an official statement, BAMF emphasized that women and girls from Afghanistan face systematic and institutional oppression by the Taliban. They are completely excluded from participating in public life. The agency described the current situation as getting worse.

A key factor in this increase is a landmark ruling from the European Court of Justice in autumn 2024. The ruling stated that Taliban rule primarily targets all women for persecution. According to BAMF, this decision has significantly raised the chances of Afghan women obtaining refugee protection.

Following the ruling, several aid and human rights organizations have encouraged Afghan women in Germany to submit new or follow-up asylum applications if they have not secured official refugee status.
