Salaries of Female Employees in Taliban’s Ministry of Education Suspended

The salaries and benefits of female employees in the Taliban’s Ministry of Education have been suspended by an order from the Minister of Education. A proposal submitted by the Human Resources Department of the Ministry of Education to the Taliban minister stated that due to difficulties in modifying the payroll system and a lack of clarity in the leader’s directive, distributing salaries to female employees would be problematic and time-consuming.

The proposal further questioned whether the decree applied to all employees or only to those female staff who are currently not performing their duties. On Saturday, June 29, the Taliban’s Minister of Education decreed that, in accordance with the proposal, the salaries of all female employees would be suspended until further notice.

A month earlier, documents revealed that the Taliban leader had standardized the salaries of all female employees, setting the pay for those not attending work at 5,000 Afghani. It was later clarified that this decree applied to all female employees, resulting in a uniform payment of 5,000 Afghani across all departments. Additionally, female employees who had been dismissed from government positions under the Taliban’s orders were not entitled to any benefits.

The proposal sent to the Taliban’s Minister of Education also noted that changes to the payroll system are challenging and require more time. It remains unclear how long female employees in the Ministry of Education will be on hold until the payroll system is adjusted according to the Taliban leader’s requirements. It is noteworthy that since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, they have also closed schools to girls, with no signs of reopening in sight.
